The big idea

Students run a full production workflow across formats — direction, production, review, release — while handling rights and disclosure to a standard that would survive outside school.

Why it matters

Portfolio-quality work needs process. Talent without process produces impressive fragments and no finished pieces.

Unpacked

What you will actually learn

Three core ideas, each taught with worked examples and then practised until it feels obvious.

01

Creative direction

Creative direction defines the visual and tonal rules everything must follow, agreed before production begins.

02

Production workflow

Production workflow sequences the work with review points, so problems surface early rather than at release.

03

Rights and disclosure

Rights and disclosure cover licences, permissions and clear labelling of AI-generated elements.

Did you know?

Studios lock a style guide before production precisely because changing direction halfway is what destroys schedules.

Common mix-up

“I will sort out the licensing later.” Discovering an asset cannot be used after release is expensive and sometimes public.

Session by session

Your 8-session journey

Sessions 3340 of the 72-session year, at two one-hour sessions per week.

  1. 1

    Warm-up and big picture

Where this module fits, what you will build, and a hands-on starter that gets everyone curious about creative direction.

  2. 2

    Creative direction

Guided teaching on creative direction, worked through together with the teacher.

  3. 3

    Creative direction — practice lab

Independent practice, small challenges and one deliberate mistake to diagnose.

  4. 4

    Production workflow

Guided teaching on production workflow, building directly on the previous two sessions.

  5. 5

    Production workflow — practice lab

Applied tasks that combine creative direction and production workflow in one piece of work.

  6. 6

    Rights and disclosure

Rights and disclosure introduced and practised, completing the toolkit needed for the project.

  7. 7

    Project build

Guided build session for the module project: Professional-style explainer campaign.

  8. 8

    Test, present and reflect

Finish, test against the checklist, present the work and explain the decisions behind it.

Project lab

Professional-style explainer campaign

Every module ends with something the student built themselves and can demonstrate. This is the piece that goes into their portfolio and gets explained out loud at the end of session 40.

Try this at home

Write a one-page style guide first, then check every finished asset against it. Redo anything that fails.

It is finished when

  • It works from start to finish without breaking
  • You can explain every part of it in your own words
  • You tested it and improved at least one thing afterwards
  • Someone else used or understood it without your help

By the end of this module

Students finishing Module 5 can:

  • Explain and use creative direction without prompting
  • Explain and use production workflow without prompting
  • Explain and use rights and disclosure without prompting
  • Build and finish professional-style explainer campaign
  • Test your own work and correct what you find
  • Talk an adult through what you made and why

Word bank

The vocabulary introduced here, in plain language:

style guide
Documented rules for consistent output.
licence
The terms under which an asset may be used.
